Are varicose veins making you self-conscious about your legs or causing discomfort in your daily life? You’re not alone. Millions of people deal with painful, bulging veins that just won’t go away on their own. The good news? You don’t have to live with them anymore.

Garden State Pain and Orthopedics specializes in modern, minimally invasive treatments that can help you look and feel better—without major surgery or downtime. Our team of doctors are available all over Northeast New Jersey.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that appear just under the surface of the skin, most often in the legs. They happen when vein valves don’t work properly, causing blood to pool. This results in raised, blue or purple veins that can be painful, itchy, or just plain unsightly.

Common symptoms include:

  • Aching or heavy legs

  • Swelling in your ankles or feet

  • Throbbing or cramping pain

  • Itching around the veins

  • Skin discoloration near the ankles

Left untreated, varicose veins can lead to more serious issues like ulcers, bleeding, or blood clots.

Who Gets Varicose Veins?

Anyone can develop varicose veins, but risk factors include:

  • Family history

  • Aging

  • Pregnancy

  • Sitting or standing for long periods

  • Obesity

  • Hormonal changes

If you’ve noticed visible veins or have leg discomfort that worsens at the end of the day, it’s time to get evaluated by a vein specialist.

Minimally Invasive Treatments for Varicose Veins

Gone are the days of painful vein stripping. Today, New Jersey vein experts use cutting-edge treatments with little to no downtime. Some of the most effective options include:

1. Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)

A laser fiber is inserted into the affected vein to seal it shut. Blood naturally reroutes to healthier veins, and the treated vein fades over time.

2. Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Similar to EVLT, but using radiofrequency energy instead of laser. This is great for larger varicose veins and is performed right in the office under local anesthesia. This is the most common treatment method used at Garden State Pain and Orthopedics.

3. Sclerotherapy

A special solution is injected into smaller varicose or spider veins, causing them to collapse and fade. It’s fast, easy, and requires no recovery time.

4. VenaSeal™ Closure System

This modern method uses a medical adhesive to seal off faulty veins. No heat or tumescent anesthesia required—just quick results with minimal discomfort.

Other common vein conditions:

1. Spider Veins (Telangiectasias)

  • Small, thin red, blue, or purple veins that appear close to the surface of the skin caused by genetics, hormone changes, prolonged standing/sitting, sun exposure.
  • Treated with: Sclerotherapy and laser therapy

2. Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)

  • A condition where the veins in the legs can't pump enough blood back to the heart creating leg swelling, aching, heaviness, skin discoloration, and leg ulcers. This creates weak or damaged vein valves, often associated with varicose veins or DVT.
  • Treated with: Compression therapy, ablation procedures, and lifestyle changes

3. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

  • A blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the legs causing swelling, pain, tenderness, warmth, and redness (sometimes silent)
  • Treatment: Anticoagulants (blood thinners), compression stockings, sometimes surgery

4. Superficial Thrombophlebitis

  • Inflammation and clotting in a vein just under the skin. Symptoms include redness, warmth, tenderness, and hard cord-like vein
  • Treatment: Warm compresses, anti-inflammatory meds, and sometimes blood thinners

5. Leg Ulcers (Venous Stasis Ulcers)

  • Open sores that develop from long-standing venous insufficiency usually near the ankles that cause pain, swelling, discolored skin, and oozing.
  • Treatment: Wound care, compression therapy, vein treatment

6. Reticular Veins

  • Medium-sized blue or green veins under the skin, larger than spider veins but smaller than varicose veins.
  • Treatment: Sclerotherapy or laser treatments
